Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market – Saturday, June 29, 2019

Dear Friends of the Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market:  Another delightful morning, a great start to the weekend, sunny, warm, & moderate humidity, see you at the Market.

No plastic – Please bring your own reusable bags for shopping & produce bagging, and reusable containers if you bring compost.

Market Events:

Bike Clinic – Aaron, Lodi, & friends will help you fix your flats and other mysterious bike problems and teach you a little bike maintenance.  They are always looking for more people who want to help others with their bike maintenance, stop by and talk to us.


9a-11a –  James Samimi Farr is an outstanding guitarist, singer, and songwriter, A recent transplant from Canada, James’ efforts to expand the folk idiom have won him such accolades as the CBC Galaxy Rising Star Award, led to collaborations with Alden Penner (ex-Unicorns) and Patrick Watson, as well as appearances alongside Sharon Van Etten, Joe Lally (Fugazi), and Kelly Joe Phelps. As The Daguerreotypes, James released his debut solo EP, Burnt Offering, in 2016.

11a-1p – Alex Gersztenc – Originally from Boston, Alex Gerszten is a DC-based singer-songwriter whose energy fluctuates between soulful blues-rock and lyrical folk, borrowing from Bob Dylan, John Mayer, The Wood Brothers, and many more in the process.

Produce Plus – Eligible customers can pick up Produce Plus checks at participating DC farmers’ markets, and spend those checks on fresh fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, and cut herbs with approved market vendors. 

Compost – Drop off your veggie kitchen compostables in the bins at the Market table.  https://compostcab.com/  The Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market is looking for some assistance with compost collection on Saturdays.  Mainly with compost bins transportation, so a vehicle, or bike trailer, etc, would be useful.  Helping in other ways with the Market’s compost collection efforts is also appreciated.  MtPFM Compost Commanders can help save the world, one banana peel at time….  Contact: MtPFarmersMarket@gmail.com or stop by the Market.

Seasonal Recipe:


Easy to assemble, these tasty wraps make a great lunch, dinner, or snack (and are perfect to bring to a picnic!)


  1. Whole grain wrap
  2. Hummus (from MtPFM’s Hilana Cuisine)
  3. Salad greens (we like to use an arugula/spinach mix, but anything will work)
  4. Red & yellow pepper, sliced
  5. Cucumber, sliced
  6. Carrots, grated
  7. Tomato, diced
  8. Feta cheese, crumbled (or your favorite cheese)
  9. Sunflower seeds (or your favorite chopped nut)
  10. Your favorite salad dressing (we like to use a lemon vinaigrette)
  11. Black pepper (optional)


  1. Spread a layer of hummus down the middle of the wrap.
  2. Top with salad greens and other raw sliced or chopped veggies of your choice.
  3. Sprinkle sunflower seed kernels (or other chopped nuts) over the veggies.
  4. Sprinkle crumbled feta (or other crumbled or grated cheese) over the veggies/seeds.
  5. Drizzle with lemon vinaigrette (or your favorite dressing). You can also just drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and squeeze fresh lemon over the filling.
  6. Sprinkle with black pepper for a bit of heat (optional).
  7. Fold over the ends, and roll up to make a wrap. Cut into slices, if desired, for sharing or ease of eating.

Some of the seasonal herbs, fruits, and veggies that should be available at the Market this week are:  Bok Choy Collards, Kale, Swiss Chard, Turnip, Onions, Beets, Turnips, Sweet Potatoes, Mushrooms, Apples, Cherries, Raspberries, Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Mint, & Oregano.  In addition to all of our year round items.

Earth Spring Farm: They will be here with milk, eggs and and early veggies and fruits.  Earth Spring is partnering with a local dairy, and there will be a signup list for those who want to order weekly milk.  earthspringcsa.com

Reids Orchard:  We will have apples as well and sweet cider.  NEW vegetable plants this week:

Zucchini and Yellow Squash plants, Banana Pepper plants: hot and sweet varieties, Cucumber plants.  A few new tomato varieties: Roma, Burpee Beefsteak and Supersonic.  The first of our Geraniums to be ready for planting: Dark Red and Cardinal Red colors… more to follow in a week or two.   NEW herbs this week: Thai Basil, Spicy globe Basil (perfect for container gardening), Orange Mint, Tuscan Blue Rosemary.  Still have supply of cool crop vegetables: kale, spinach, swiss chard, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage green and red, lettuce, many tomato varieties cherry, grape and standard; and pepper varieties sweet and hot herbs including sweet basil, thyme, parsley, sage, lavender.  5 different fruit butters.  Themed herb gardens in 24″ planters: Pizza Herb garden, French Herb garden, Paul Simon Herb garden (parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil), & Hot ‘n Spicy Herb garden.   www.reidsorchardwinery.com

Groff’s Content Farm:  Our butcher will have whole chickens, chicken breasts, chicken wings, various types of sausage, and free range hen and duck eggs.  As always, our chickens run free on pasture and are fed free choice a non GMO, soy free feed which has tested free of glyphosphate.  They also get a fodder and spent grains to supplement their pasture and feed ration.  www.groffscontentfarm.com

No.1 Sons:  NEW! Mustard Kraut is made with 2 types of mustard seeds, which brined in white wine and vinegar.  Just in time for 4th of July grilling.  EXCITING! Three Part Harmony Blooms  – Three Part Harmony Farm is a is a small-scale agroecological farm, located on a 2-acre parcel in northeast Washington, in the Brookland neighborhood.  We operate grow vegetables and operate multi-farm CSA that focuses on uplifting underrepresented farmers as well as operate a nursery that provides local schools and home gardeners with plants to nourish them.  This season, we are excited to bring you Three Part Harmony Blooms!  Local and fresh cut flowers grown using only organic practices right here in DC.  Come stop and smell our flowers!
