Dear Friends of Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market:


It is gonna be another great day at the Market, partly cloudy & warm, come early anyway to get the best of the Market, stay and enjoy the music, snacks, & neighbors.  Peaches are here!

It’s the Fourth of July long weekend, so I guess it is OK to be patriotic…..


Patriotic Fruit Pizza

Prep – 30 m; Cook – 10 m; Ready In – 1 h


“This is a fun recipe for the 4th of July holiday! Fresh fruit is a hit on desserts during the summer months! Making this dessert is as fun as eating it! This recipe feeds a lot, but the leftovers are only good a day or two.” – Marcy R.



  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 large bananas, sliced – or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, or as needed
  • 1 (16 ounce) fresh strawberries, sliced or rasberries
  • 1 (6 ounce) fresh blueberries



  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mash the vegetable shortening and margarine together until thoroughly combined, and beat in 1 1/2 cup of sugar, eggs, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix in the flour mixture to make a workable dough, and spread the dough out in a rectangle shape onto an ungreased 12×17 inch baking sheet.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until very lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes. Allow to cool completely.
  4. While the cookie base is cooling, mash the cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth. Place sliced bananas in a bowl, and gently toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  5. To decorate the pizza, spread the cream cheese filling all over the cookie base in an even, smooth layer. Place the blueberries in a square in neat, closely-spaced rows, in the left upper corner for blue stars. Arrange alternating stripes of white bananas and red strawberry slices across the pizza. Refrigerate leftovers.

Reids Orchard:  The heat made everything grow…  This week we will have strawberries, sugar snap peas, blueberries, sweet cherries and some red raspberries.  And probably plants if we still have some left.  www.reidsorchardwinery.com


Groff’s Content Farm:  We will have fresh duck at Market!  We also have some new grassfed beef bologna and snack sticks made without preservatives or added nitrates.  As one customer said, they are weirdly good; I personally can’t stop eating them.  Kind of summer sausage-like would be great on crackers if you can get them that far.  We have lots of ground beef and bacon for the perfect grassfed bacon cheese burger paired with cheese from Spring Gap Mountain of course.  Also Bratwurst and keilbasa which are outstanding grilled on a bun topped with Number 1 Sons sauerkraut.   www.groffscontentfarm.com

No.1 Sons:  June is upon us and it is cucumber pickle bonanza at the pickle stand.  Half Sours!  Full Sours!  Sweet Pickles (vinegar pickled, not fermented)!  It is the last guaranteed weekend for our 2017 Spring Ramp Kraut, too.  Our spicy Rippin Rosetdio kraut will soon be replacing the Spring Ramp Kraut.  As always, bring back your pickle container to the Number 1 Sons stand + a refill is 25 cents off.  number1sons.com/

Farmers’ Market Brigade  –  Help the DC Greens Farmers’ Market Brigade and DC farmers’ markets increase fresh food access across the city!  Through the Produce Plus Program, qualified customers are eligible to receive up to $20 each week to purchase fresh produce from local farmers.


Interested volunteers will need to sign up for a Farmers’ Market Brigade training in May and plan to…

Commit to 5 market shifts (or more!) between June and September

Distribute Produce Plus checks at farmers’ markets

Provide excellent customer care to all farmers’ market shoppers

All volunteers, including returning Brigade members, must sign up for a 2017 training in order to volunteer at a market shift:  dcgreens.org/brigade/
