Dear Friends of Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market:

We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. You will see strawberries at a few more vendors’ tables this week. If you have already noticed, the Mount Pleasant Market is excited to welcome a new vendor, Meat Crafters, to our Saturday gatherings. Look for them behind the bandstand. Or just follow the smell of delicious smoked meat. We are also pleased to welcome back Earth Spring Farm, who will be joining us for the first time this season on Saturday.

MtP Farmers’ Market Eating Instructions or What Do I Do with This Stuff?

Asparagus Panzanella
1/3 cup / 80 ml buttermilk
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
2-3 scallions, thinly sliced
fine grain sea salt

1 bunch of asparagus
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large handful of torn bread
2-3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
edible herb flowers (optional)

Start by making the dressing. Whisk together the buttermilk, olive oil, mustard, vinegar, half of the scallions, and a couple of pinches of salt. Taste and adjust if needed, before setting aside.

Trim the tough ends from the asparagus, and cut into ½-inch segments, on a bias.

Melt the butter in a large skillet; add the bread, toss until well coated, then toast, tossing now and then, until golden. Transfer to a paper or clean linen towel.

Bring a saucepan of water to a boil, salt generously, and blanch the asparagus until just tender – 20 seconds or so if your asparagus is thin, a bit longer depending on thickness. Drain, and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking if you’d like to serve this cold. Alternately, transfer the asparagus directly to the serving bowl without the cold water rinse, if you’d like it warm. Add the remaining scallions, a good splash of the dressing, toss well, and decide if you’d like more dressing. Finish with the sesame seeds, toasted bread, and a sprinkling of herb blossoms if you have them. Yum, yum…….

UPDATES FROM FARMERS AND FOODIES:

Richfield Farm: Will have a mix of herbs and garden plants for use in your spring gardening plans.

Truck Patch Farms: The produce table will have strawberries, baby arugula, Swiss chard, kale, radish, asparagus, broccoli, and red beets.

The meat table will have fresh smoked andouille sausage, bacon, thin and thick sliced, bone-in pork chops, shoulder roast, bone-in and boneless. Smoked boneless hams, chicken, whole, boneless breast, legs, thigh, wings. Turkey, boneless breast, ground white meat.

Earth Spring Farm: Mike the farmer is happy to report he will be back this Saturday with strawberries (chemical free), non-GMO eggs, chard, kale, spring onions, red and green lettuce, and chives.

Groff’s Content Farm: Good local raised & butchered meats. Plus dog treats.

Quaker Valley Orchards: Fresh picked strawberries! Asparagus in purple and green (purple slightly sweeter). Apples in Honeycrisp, Fuji and cameo. Popping corn and honey. Jams, sauces, apple butter, Apple chips.

Reid’s Orchard: Strawberries(!), apples, herbs, cider, and applesauce.

Atwater’s Bread: Naturally leavened, hand shaped loaves like Irish Brown, Peasant Wheat, Sunflower Flex, Sesame Wheat, Struan, Ten Grain, Spelt, Olive, Caraway Rye, Raisin Pumpernickel, Raisin Walnut, Cranberry Pecan, Jalapeno Cheddar, Catonsville Sourdough, Rosemary Italian, Country White, Ciabatta, baguettes. As well as luscious sweets – Seasonal pies, Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies, Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Molasses Ginger Cookies, Snickerdoodles, Apricot Bran Muffins, Coffee Cake Pecan Muffins, Mixed Fruit Scones, our Good Food Award winning jam, Fruit & Nut Granola, Cherry Chocolate Granola, Seasonal Teacakes, brownies, and pound cake.

Spring Gap Mountain Creamery: Fresh from Paw Paw, WV, three cheeses: Jersey Gold Gouda, Shenandoah Sunrise tomme, Farmhouse Feta, West Virginia Blue, and Bloomery.

Craft Kombucha: Mount Pleasant’s neighborhood kombucha brewery, Craft Kombucha brings balance to your life and your body. Each Saturday you can fill up your refillable bottles with one of our unique and delicious flavors, fresh from the tap. This weekend’s flavor lineup will include several of our extensive list seasonal flavors. Cheers!

Number 1 Sons: Our resident pickle vendor will have kraut and kimchi as well as a hot (cabbage) Hearts (still too early for pickles!) — cabbage hearts fermented with lots of spices and habanero peppers. Very crunchy and hot hot hot! Great to add to a salad or to a cheese plate. On special for this week is Ramp+Dill Kraut, the quantities are limited, so get it while you can!

Customers can bring back their containers to No. 1 Sons to refill for them! Although note they can’t take them back for others to reuse. Customers can also bring their own jars. Our sizes are 12oz, just shy of a pint, and 32oz, a quart. Wide-mouth jars are best for packing kimchi + kraut.

Pleasant Pops: This week the Pop masters will be bringing Strawberry Ginger Lemonade, Pineapple Basil, Hibiscus Pomegranate, and Cookies and Cream.

People’s Bao: Peter has Chinese steamed edamame buns with tender, slow roasted free range heritage pork or duck. Also available are hot Asian soups to enjoy at the market or cold to take home.

Teeny Pies: will be bringing strawberry rhubarb, key lime, and strawberry rhubarb. The savory pies for the week will be Thai red curry (last week!) and pull pork pot pie.

Meat Crafters: Grilled pork, chicken, & lamb sausage sandwiches.

Pleasant Neighborhood Library for a ride to Petworth Neighborhood Library. Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market – May 23, 2015

Dear Friends of Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market:

Welcome to another edition of the MtPFM Newsletter. Strawberries are here! The first of the berry crop! Below is one of my favorite recipes to show case my delicious market find and also trick my friends into thinking I am one crazy awesome chef, when really I just dump things in a bowl.

Balsamic Strawberries:
Adapted from Jamie Oliver’s The Return of the Naked Chef

Ingredients:
• 1 pint of strawberries, quartered
• ~4 tbsp of sugar (to taste)
• 10 tbsp of high quality balsamic vinegar
• 1 vanilla pod or 1 tsp of vanilla extract
• 14 oz of mascarpone cheese
• 4-5 leaves of basil and/or mint finely sliced
Method:
• Combine strawberries, sugar, and vinegar in a bowl, allow the mixture to marinate for up to two hours.
• In a separate bowl, combine mascarpone cheese with vanilla and possibly a pinch of sugar.
• In a small bowl or old style champagne glass, scoop out a couple tablespoons of the cheese and top with strawberries. Sprinkle sliced herbs on top
