May 8 – Fresas y Espárragos (Strawberries and Asparagus)

This Saturday is Mt Pleasant’s inaugural Latino Family Day and El Mercadito (the market) is a proud participant in the first half of the day’s activities! Music provided by Lamont Plaza’s very own Alex Hiraeta and Friends: acoustic-only percussion, stand up bass, and guitars create music that local girl Jody Melto describes as “earthy traditional folk music with a salsa-esque groove that sticks in you hips”. Fresh tamales prepared by our new Latina vendor, the Adelante Mt. Pleasant Cooperativa! They will be a “transition vendor” working towards sourcing ingredients locally and organically during the season. Rosa and Lorena will also let you make your own tortillas this weekend, and rumor has it there will be horchata! Yum! Hot, Latino food off the grill for sale to take home prepared by the Latino Federation of Greater Washington (LFGW). Helmet give-away by Washington Area Bike Association (WABA) and a Spanish/English dictionary of bike parts at the Bike Clinic (courtesy of Stokes Elementary School). Brush up on your conversational Spanish and dress festive!  Thanks to the Asociacion Latina de Mount Pleasant (LAMP), Vida Senior Centers, and the other local groups and businesses putting this together! This all day event includes the market in the morning, and is followed by events in the afternoon, a free picnic at 4p and a family friendly Latino movie night (with English subtitles) at 7:30p.

The Farmers’ Market Bike Clinic is also in operation this Saturday season to top off your tires, lube your chain, and show you how to maintain your bike..FREE! This week we’ll be joined by the WABA Bike Ambassadors talking up cycling, providing safety tips, doing helmet fittings, and giving away some helmets! Be sure to ask about Bike to Work Day coming up May 21 – there’s always a peloton of local riders leaving from Lamont Park!
